When I first saw Salobre Golf Resort around seven years ago, my perspective was clear: I was a keen golfer, and I was immediately taken with this place.

Salobre became a regular part of my holidays in Gran Canaria. My annual escape to the south: sunshine, a break from everyday life and, of course, golf. Anyone who plays knows how it is: tee times, practice and the next round can easily shape much of your day.

That enthusiasm was certainly one of the reasons why I later decided to make Salobre one of the places I call home.

I have now lived in the resort for around three years.

And strangely enough, I now play considerably less golf than I used to.

I cannot even explain exactly why.

Villa 15 is only about 200 metres as the crow flies from the driving range. I could pick up a club, walk over and practise almost whenever I wanted.

Yet I do it surprisingly rarely.

Perhaps that is precisely the reason: I could do it at any time.

Instead, I often walk through the resort with the dog in the morning. I see the fairways, the landscape and the light across the golf course. At some point I started calling this walk, half jokingly, “playing golf without clubs.”

And sometimes that is enough for me.

It is similar for my wife. And over time I began to notice that many of the owners around me hardly play golf at all, or do not play it at all.

At first, that genuinely surprised me.

What the Name “Golf Resort” Doesn't Tell You

Golf naturally shapes Salobre. But if you do not know the place, the name might easily make you think that almost everything here revolves around the sport.

That is no longer how I see the resort.

In winter you see the classic golf guests: often one or two couples spending several weeks here. On their golf days, I recognise the rhythm of my own holidays from years ago.

Alongside them are people who mainly enjoy the sunshine, their villa and the pool, then head out for dinner in the evening. Others now combine their stay with working remotely from the terrace and taking a break in the garden.

Golf does not have to be part of the experience at all.

My Own Personal Garden Show

For me, the golf course has sometimes become my own personal garden show.

Perhaps that is a very German way of looking at it. But the grounds are tended throughout the year by a team of gardeners, and the result is a landscape you have in front of you every day.

You do not have to play on it to enjoy it.

Sometimes, simply letting your eyes wander across the golf course is enough.

Especially when you have an open view across this landscape, it is something you do not necessarily tire of, even during a longer stay.

Perhaps that is why I now understand better why some of my neighbours bought a villa here even though golf plays hardly any role in their everyday lives.

What Not to Expect from Salobre

Salobre is not a typical holiday resort with a beachfront promenade, shops, restaurants and entertainment right outside your door.

If you want to step out of your accommodation in the morning and immediately find yourself in the middle of the holiday atmosphere, you will probably feel more at home on the coast. For me, that is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage. It is simply a question of what you expect from your holiday.

What Has Changed for Me

Seven years ago, I would probably have described Salobre primarily in terms of golf.

Today I live just a few hundred metres from the practice facilities, and some mornings I would rather go for a walk with the dog. The golf course is still there – and perhaps simply knowing that I could play at any time has itself become part of the luxury.

Cuando vi Salobre Golf Resort por primera vez, hace unos siete años, mi perspectiva era bastante clara: jugaba al golf con entusiasmo y este lugar me fascinó desde el primer momento.

También en mis siguientes vacaciones en Gran Canaria, Salobre volvió a formar parte de mis viajes una y otra vez. Mi escapada anual al sur, buscar el sol, desconectar de la rutina y, por supuesto, jugar al golf. Quien juega lo conoce bien: las horas de salida, el entrenamiento y la siguiente vuelta pueden acabar marcando buena parte del día.

Ese entusiasmo fue seguramente también una de las razones por las que, más adelante, decidí establecerme aquí.

Hoy llevo alrededor de tres años viviendo en el resort.

Y, curiosamente, ahora juego mucho menos al golf que antes.

Ni siquiera sé explicar del todo por qué.

Villa 15 está a apenas unos 200 metros en línea recta del campo de prácticas. Podría coger un palo, ir andando y entrenar prácticamente cuando quisiera.

Y, sin embargo, lo hago sorprendentemente pocas veces.

Quizá sea precisamente por eso: podría hacerlo en cualquier momento.

En cambio, por las mañanas suelo pasear con el perro por el resort. Veo los fairways, el paisaje y la luz sobre el campo. En algún momento empecé a llamar a este paseo, medio en broma, «jugar al golf sin palos».

Y a veces eso me basta.

A mi mujer le ocurre algo parecido. Y con el tiempo me di cuenta de que muchos propietarios de mi entorno más cercano apenas juegan al golf o no juegan en absoluto.

Al principio, reconozco que me sorprendió.

Lo que no cuenta el nombre «Golf Resort»

Por supuesto, el golf marca Salobre. Pero quien no conoce el lugar podría pensar, solo por el nombre, que aquí casi todo gira alrededor de este deporte.

Hoy ya no veo el resort de esa manera.

En invierno se ven los huéspedes clásicos de golf: a menudo una pareja o dos parejas que pasan aquí varias semanas. En sus días de golf reconozco el ritmo que tenían mis propias vacaciones hace algunos años.

Pero también hay personas que disfrutan principalmente del sol, de la villa y de la piscina, y que por la noche salen a cenar. Otros combinan su estancia con el teletrabajo en la terraza y alguna pausa en el jardín.

El golf no tiene por qué desempeñar ningún papel.

Mi particular exposición de jardinería

Para mí, el campo de golf se ha convertido a veces en una especie de exposición de jardinería particular.

Quizá sea una forma muy alemana de verlo. Pero durante todo el año numerosos jardineros cuidan el campo y el resultado es un paisaje que uno tiene cada día delante de los ojos.

No hace falta jugar en él para disfrutarlo.

La mirada también puede pasear por el campo de golf.

Sobre todo cuando se tiene una vista abierta a este paisaje, es algo de lo que no resulta fácil cansarse, incluso durante una estancia más larga.

Quizá por eso entiendo hoy mejor por qué algunos de mis vecinos compraron una villa aquí aunque el golf apenas tenga importancia en su vida cotidiana.

Lo que no hay que esperar de Salobre

Salobre no es el típico destino turístico con paseo marítimo, tiendas, restaurantes y entretenimiento justo delante de la puerta.

Quien quiera salir por la mañana de su alojamiento y encontrarse inmediatamente en medio de la vida turística probablemente se sentirá más a gusto en la costa. Para mí no es una ventaja ni una desventaja, sino simplemente una cuestión de lo que cada uno espera de sus vacaciones.

Lo que ha cambiado para mí

Hace siete años probablemente habría descrito Salobre, ante todo, hablando de golf.

Hoy vivo a pocos cientos de metros de las instalaciones de entrenamiento y algunas mañanas prefiero salir a pasear con el perro. El campo sigue ahí y quizá precisamente saber que podría jugar en cualquier momento se haya convertido en parte del lujo.

Als ich das Salobre Golf Resort vor rund sieben Jahren zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, war meine Perspektive eindeutig: Ich war Golfspieler – und von diesem Ort sofort begeistert.

Auch bei meinen späteren Urlauben auf Gran Canaria gehörte Salobre für mich immer wieder dazu. Meine jährliche Flucht in den Süden, Sonne tanken, raus aus dem Alltag und natürlich Golf spielen. Wer selbst Golf spielt, kennt das: Abschlagzeiten, Training und die nächste Runde können einen Urlaubstag ziemlich bestimmen.

Diese Begeisterung war sicher auch einer der Gründe, weshalb ich mich später entschieden habe, hier einen Lebensmittelpunkt zu schaffen.

Heute wohne ich seit rund drei Jahren im Resort.

Und ausgerechnet jetzt spiele ich deutlich weniger Golf als früher.

Ich kann nicht einmal genau erklären, warum.

Die Villa 15 liegt nur rund 200 Meter Luftlinie von der Driving Range entfernt. Ich könnte einen Schläger nehmen, zu Fuß hinübergehen und praktisch jederzeit trainieren.

Ich mache es trotzdem erstaunlich selten.

Vielleicht liegt es gerade daran: Ich könnte jederzeit.

Stattdessen gehe ich morgens häufig mit dem Hund durch das Resort. Ich sehe die Fairways, die Landschaft und das Licht über dem Golfplatz. Irgendwann habe ich angefangen, diese Runde für mich „Golfspielen ohne Schläger“ zu nennen.

Und manchmal reicht mir genau das.

Bei meiner Frau ist es ähnlich. Und mit der Zeit fiel mir auf, dass auch viele Eigentümer in meiner unmittelbaren Umgebung kaum oder überhaupt nicht Golf spielen.

Am Anfang hat mich das tatsächlich gewundert.

Was der Name „Golf Resort“ nicht erzählt

Natürlich prägt Golf Salobre. Aber wer den Ort nicht kennt, könnte beim Namen schnell vermuten, dass sich hier fast alles um diesen Sport dreht.

So erlebe ich das Resort heute nicht mehr.

Im Winter sieht man die klassischen Golfgäste: häufig ein Paar oder zwei Paare, die mehrere Wochen hier verbringen. An ihren Golftagen erkenne ich meinen eigenen Rhythmus von früher wieder.

Daneben gibt es Menschen, die hauptsächlich Sonne, Villa und Pool genießen und abends zum Essen fahren. Andere verbinden ihren Aufenthalt inzwischen mit Homeoffice auf der Terrasse und einer Pause im Garten.

Golf muss dabei überhaupt keine Rolle spielen.

Meine persönliche Landesgartenschau

Für mich ist der Golfplatz inzwischen manchmal meine persönliche Landesgartenschau.

Vielleicht ist das eine sehr deutsche Betrachtungsweise. Aber die Anlage wird ganzjährig von zahlreichen Gärtnern gepflegt und befindet sich entsprechend in einem Zustand, den man jeden Tag vor Augen hat.

Man muss darauf nicht spielen, um etwas davon zu haben.

Das Auge kann auf dem Golfplatz spazieren gehen.

Gerade mit einem freien Blick auf diese Landschaft ist das etwas, von dem man auch bei einem längeren Aufenthalt nicht unbedingt genug bekommt.

Vielleicht verstehe ich deshalb heute besser, warum einige meiner Nachbarn ihre Villa hier gekauft haben, obwohl Golf in ihrem eigenen Alltag kaum eine Rolle spielt.

Was man von Salobre nicht erwarten sollte

Salobre ist kein klassischer Ferienort mit Strandpromenade, Geschäften, Restaurants und Unterhaltung direkt vor der Haustür.

Wer morgens aus seiner Unterkunft treten und sofort mitten im touristischen Leben stehen möchte, wird an der Küste wahrscheinlich glücklicher. Für mich ist das kein Vor- oder Nachteil, sondern eine Frage dessen, was man von seinem Urlaub erwartet.

Was sich für mich verändert hat

Vor sieben Jahren hätte ich Salobre wahrscheinlich zuerst über Golf beschrieben.

Heute wohne ich wenige hundert Meter von den Trainingsmöglichkeiten entfernt und gehe morgens manchmal lieber mit dem Hund meine Runde. Der Golfplatz ist immer noch da – und vielleicht ist gerade das Wissen, jederzeit spielen zu können, inzwischen ein Teil des Luxus.

Spend just a few days here and you notice the golf courses, the villas, the hotel and the landscape. Stay longer, and eventually you begin to notice something else: the rhythm this place develops over the course of an ordinary day.

In Salobre, the day begins as soon as the first light falls across the golf course.

Early morning

In Gran Canaria, sunrise and the start of the day shift far less between summer and winter than they do in Central Europe. In summer it begins to get light at around seven; in winter, roughly an hour later.

My own day, however, is governed less by the clock than by my collie. In summer we usually set off at around 7.15; in winter, closer to eight. Our first walk takes us around the Old Course and lasts about an hour. Coffee comes afterwards.

At that hour Salobre is already awake, but not yet properly in motion. Among the greenery along Calle Swing, around the golf course and in the residential complexes, a few cats shelter away and tend to appear in the same places each morning.

Small changes are noticeable around the villas too. When you live in a complex where holiday guests come and go, you gradually learn to spot them. A different car suddenly stands outside a villa. A breakfast or bread delivery appears by a door for the first time. A terrace that was empty yesterday is occupied again the following morning. Often, without having met anyone yet, you already know: new guests have arrived.

And with them, the mix changes too. Germans, Britons, Scandinavians, Dutch, Spaniards and many other nationalities spend their holidays alongside one another, each bringing a slightly different rhythm to the day.

Joggers, dogs and a small gesture

On my walk I meet people out for a stroll, with or without a dog, and a surprising number of joggers. Fast and slow, ambitious and leisurely – and occasionally someone who clearly found the Canarian sun more convincing than the sunscreen the day before.

Every now and then a car passes too. Tradespeople, guests, staff or holidaymakers heading out early. There is one small habit I still appreciate: people greet one another. Sometimes a brief wave from the car is enough, a nod, or a “Buenos días” through an open window. Nobody makes much of it.

Yet for me, that uncomplicated courtesy is part of Gran Canaria – an everyday habit that is no longer quite so natural everywhere else, and one I would miss here. Greetings among walkers and joggers vary too: some stop for a few words, others simply nod and carry on.

The mood is almost always good. Which is hardly surprising. Many of the people you meet here in the morning have something that everyday life often lacks: time. No commute to the office, no school run, no rush-hour traffic. For some, these are the two or three weeks of the year they have been looking forward to for months. You can sense that in a place.

The people who keep Salobre green

Among the most familiar faces are the gardeners. I see five or six of them on my route almost every morning, while others are already spread across different parts of this extensive resort. Their work begins with the daylight.

As a guest, what you mainly notice is the result: well-kept green spaces, trimmed plants, palms, flowers and the vegetation lining the roads and villa complexes. Spend more time here and you begin to understand just how continuous that work has to be. In Gran Canaria, vegetation grows twelve months of the year. Given the size of Salobre, the gardening team probably never really finishes – by the time one area is done, another is almost ready to be started again.

After all these years, something else stands out just as much as their work: their friendliness. “Hola, señor.” “Buenos días.” Sometimes a few words, nothing remarkable. But over time, small encounters like these create a sense of familiarity.

Fifteen minutes before the first coffee

My walk usually ends at the first tee of the Old Course. My favourite bench is there. From here the view stretches towards the Atlantic, the Faro de Maspalomas and Meloneras. Almost every morning I sit there for about fifteen minutes.

Nothing special happens. You simply sit there and look. Perhaps that is precisely why, over the years, it has become a habit.

Then it is back to the villa. And finally, coffee.

The golf theatre begins

As the morning progresses, the scene on the Old Course changes noticeably. More and more players appear – a little earlier in summer, while in winter the rhythm shifts slightly later.

From our terrace, overlooking the golf course, I then have a form of entertainment that never appears in a villa description. I call it golf theatre. With a second or third coffee, you can spend a surprisingly long time watching the players.

There is something wonderfully unpredictable about golf. In the morning, nobody really knows how the next few hours are going to unfold. A perfectly struck shot, a ball landing somewhere it most definitely was not meant to go, a rather lengthy search – and sometimes a player's body language is enough to tell you that whatever just happened was not part of the plan. Every now and then you hear a “Fore!”. Apart from that, even a busy golf course is remarkably quiet. The electric golf carts move through the landscape and eventually simply become part of the view.

You do not have to play golf yourself to enjoy watching it.

Not every villa has this view – location and orientation make a considerable difference within the resort.

When very little seems to happen at midday

Around midday, one of Salobre's particular characteristics becomes especially apparent. There is no traditional town centre, no market square, no shopping street, no school or church around which daily life gathers. And yet many villas are occupied, people are playing golf and the hotel has guests.

Salobre doesn't bring people together in one place. It spreads them out.

Some are playing golf, others are by the pool, sitting on their terrace or have long since headed for the coast or the interior of the island. As a result, even when the resort is well occupied, it can feel surprisingly empty.

And you have to like that. This is not a place that constantly tries to entertain you. Instead, it leaves plenty of room to decide for yourself what the day is going to become.

After the round

Eventually, even the longest round comes to an end. Golf, however, does not necessarily finish at the last hole. Afterwards people sit together, have a drink, discuss the good shots and, very probably, spend even longer discussing the bad ones.

One option is the terrace at Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity. Set high above parts of the golf course, it offers wide views across the resort. Those who prefer to stay at their villa can just as easily spend the afternoon on their own terrace.

Eventually the golf shoes and sportswear disappear. People shower, get ready for the evening and start thinking about dinner.

What shall we do tonight?

There is no need to leave Salobre in the evening either. Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity offers several dining options, from informal choices to more ambitious cuisine; Sidecar is one of the options for those looking for something more refined.

Later, the terraces fill again. People meet for dinner, have a drink and talk; and depending on the evening, there may also be live music.

I have still heard guests say: “It would be too quiet for me.” I can understand that. The good news is that there is no need to choose between peace and activity.

Anyone who wants to spend the evening in the resort can stay there. Those looking for restaurants, a promenade and considerably more activity can drive to Maspalomas or Meloneras – after around 15 to 20 minutes, you find yourself in a completely different holiday atmosphere. There is enough variety along the coast to deserve an article of its own.

The final walk

As the sun sets, the golf course gradually empties. The last players disappear, the carts become fewer and, little by little, the paths belong more to the walkers again.

For me, this is when my collie comes back into the picture. In the evening I usually take a shorter walk around the New Course. It is considerably shorter than our morning circuit of the Old Course, the temperature is pleasant and the day's golf has come to an end.

Quien pasa aquí solo unos días ve campos de golf, villas, el hotel y mucho paisaje. Quien vive aquí durante más tiempo acaba percibiendo algo diferente: el ritmo que este lugar adquiere a lo largo de un día cualquiera.

En Salobre, el día comienza en cuanto aparece la primera luz sobre el campo de golf.

La primera hora de la mañana

En Gran Canaria, la hora del amanecer y el comienzo del día varían mucho menos entre verano e invierno que en el centro de Europa. En verano empieza a clarear hacia las siete; en invierno, aproximadamente una hora más tarde.

Mi día, de todos modos, depende menos del reloj que de mi collie. En verano solemos salir hacia las 7.15; en invierno, más bien alrededor de las ocho. Nuestro primer paseo da una vuelta al Old Course y dura aproximadamente una hora. El café viene después.

A esa hora Salobre ya está despierto, aunque todavía no se ha puesto realmente en movimiento. Entre la vegetación de la Calle Swing, alrededor del campo de golf y en los complejos se esconden algunos gatos que por la mañana suelen aparecer en los mismos lugares.

También en las villas se perciben pequeños cambios. Con el tiempo se aprende a fijarse en estas cosas cuando se vive en un complejo donde los huéspedes van cambiando. De repente hay otro coche delante de una villa. Junto a una puerta aparece por primera vez el desayuno o el pan encargado. Una terraza que ayer estaba vacía vuelve a estar ocupada a la mañana siguiente. Muchas veces, sin haber visto todavía a nadie, uno ya sabe: han llegado nuevos huéspedes.

Con ellos también cambia la mezcla. Alemanes, británicos, escandinavos, neerlandeses, españoles y muchas otras nacionalidades pasan aquí sus vacaciones unos junto a otros, y cada cual trae consigo un ritmo diario ligeramente diferente.

Corredores, perros y un pequeño gesto

Durante mi paseo me cruzo con gente que camina, con perro o sin él, y con una cantidad sorprendente de corredores. Rápidos y lentos, ambiciosos y tranquilos; y, de vez en cuando, alguno en quien se nota que el día anterior el sol canario resultó más convincente que la protección solar.

Entre ellos pasan algunos coches. Trabajadores, huéspedes, empleados o turistas que han salido temprano. Hay una pequeña costumbre que sigue gustándome: la gente se saluda. A veces basta con levantar brevemente la mano desde el coche, hacer un gesto con la cabeza o decir «Buenos días» por la ventanilla abierta. Nadie le da mayor importancia.

Pero precisamente esa cortesía sencilla forma parte, para mí, de Gran Canaria: una forma de convivencia cotidiana que en otros lugares ya no resulta tan natural y que aquí no me gustaría perder. También entre corredores y paseantes los saludos son distintos: algunos se detienen para intercambiar unas palabras; otros simplemente asienten y continúan su camino.

El ambiente es casi siempre bueno. En realidad, no sorprende. Muchas de las personas con las que uno se cruza aquí por la mañana tienen algo que en la vida cotidiana suele faltar: tiempo. No van a la oficina, ni al colegio, ni están atrapadas en el tráfico de camino al trabajo. Para algunas son dos o tres semanas al año que llevaban mucho tiempo esperando. Y eso se nota en un lugar.

Las personas que mantienen verde Salobre

Entre los encuentros más constantes están quienes trabajan en los jardines. En mi recorrido veo prácticamente cada mañana a cinco o seis personas, mientras otras ya están repartidas por diferentes zonas de este extenso resort. El trabajo comienza con la luz del día.

Como huésped se ve, ante todo, el resultado: zonas verdes cuidadas, plantas podadas, palmeras, flores y la vegetación que acompaña las calles y las zonas de villas. Quien pasa aquí más tiempo acaba comprendiendo hasta qué punto ese trabajo tiene que ser continuo. En Gran Canaria la vegetación crece durante los doce meses del año. Teniendo en cuenta las dimensiones de Salobre, probablemente el equipo de jardinería nunca termina del todo: cuando una zona está lista, en otra casi se puede empezar de nuevo.

Después de todos estos años, hay algo que me sigue llamando tanto la atención como su trabajo: la amabilidad. «Hola, señor». «Buenos días». A veces unas pocas palabras, nada extraordinario. Pero son precisamente esos pequeños encuentros los que, con el tiempo, crean cierta familiaridad.

Quince minutos antes del primer café

Mi paseo suele terminar en el tee 1 del Old Course. Allí está mi banco favorito. Desde aquí la vista se extiende hacia el Atlántico, el Faro de Maspalomas y Meloneras. Casi todas las mañanas me siento allí unos quince minutos.

No ocurre nada especial. Uno simplemente se sienta y mira. Quizá sea precisamente esa la razón por la que, con los años, se ha convertido en una costumbre.

Después regreso a la villa. Y entonces, por fin, llega el café.

Empieza el espectáculo del golf

A medida que avanza la mañana, la imagen del Old Course cambia claramente. Cada vez aparecen más jugadores en el campo; en verano algo antes, mientras que en invierno el ritmo se desplaza ligeramente hacia más tarde.

Desde nuestra terraza, con vistas al campo de golf, tengo entonces una forma de entretenimiento que no aparece en ninguna descripción de una villa. Yo lo llamo el espectáculo del golf. Con el segundo o tercer café se puede pasar bastante tiempo observando a los jugadores.

El golf tiene algo maravillosamente imprevisible. Por la mañana nadie sabe exactamente cómo van a transcurrir las siguientes horas. Un golpe perfecto, una bola que termina justo donde definitivamente no debía terminar, una búsqueda algo más larga; y a veces basta con observar el lenguaje corporal de un jugador para saber que aquello no formaba parte del plan. De vez en cuando se oye un «Fore!». Por lo demás, incluso un campo de golf bastante concurrido resulta sorprendentemente tranquilo. Los buggies eléctricos se desplazan por el paisaje y, con el tiempo, simplemente pasan a formar parte de la imagen.

No hace falta jugar al golf para disfrutar observándolo.

No todas las villas ofrecen estas vistas: dentro del resort, la ubicación y la orientación marcan una diferencia considerable.

Cuando al mediodía parece que ocurre poco

Al mediodía se hace especialmente visible una de las peculiaridades de Salobre. No existe un núcleo urbano clásico, ni una plaza, ni una calle comercial, ni un colegio o una iglesia alrededor de los cuales se concentre la vida cotidiana. Y, sin embargo, muchas villas están ocupadas, hay jugadores en el campo de golf y huéspedes en el hotel.

Salobre no concentra a la gente. La distribuye.

Algunos juegan al golf, otros están junto a la piscina, sentados en su terraza o hace tiempo que han salido hacia la costa o el interior de la isla. Por eso, incluso en un día con una ocupación elevada, el resort puede parecer sorprendentemente vacío.

Y eso es algo que tiene que gustar. No es un lugar que trate de entretener constantemente a quien lo visita. Más bien deja bastante espacio para decidir por uno mismo qué hacer con el día.

Después de la ronda de golf

En algún momento termina incluso la ronda más larga. Pero el golf no acaba necesariamente en el último hoyo. Después uno se sienta con los demás, toma algo, comenta los buenos golpes y, con bastante probabilidad, todavía con más detalle los malos.

Una de las posibilidades es la terraza del Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity. Situada por encima de parte del campo de golf, ofrece una amplia vista sobre el complejo. Quien prefiera quedarse en su villa puede dejar pasar la tarde igual de bien en su propia terraza.

En algún momento desaparecen los zapatos de golf y la ropa deportiva. Uno se ducha, se prepara para la noche y empieza a tener hambre.

¿Qué hacemos esta noche?

Tampoco por la noche es imprescindible salir de Salobre. El Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity ofrece diferentes opciones gastronómicas, desde propuestas informales hasta una cocina más ambiciosa; Sidecar es una de las alternativas para quienes buscan algo más elaborado.

Más tarde las terrazas vuelven a llenarse. La gente se reúne para cenar, tomar algo y conversar; y, dependiendo de la noche, también puede haber música en directo.

Aun así, alguna vez he oído decir a huéspedes: «Para mí sería demasiado tranquilo». Lo entiendo. La buena noticia es que no hay que elegir entre tranquilidad y ambiente.

Quien quiera pasar la noche en el resort puede quedarse allí. Quien busque restaurantes, paseo marítimo y bastante más movimiento puede ir a Maspalomas o Meloneras: en unos 15 o 20 minutos en coche se encuentra en un ambiente vacacional completamente distinto. La oferta de la costa es lo suficientemente amplia como para dedicarle un artículo propio.

La última vuelta

Con la puesta de sol, el campo de golf se va vaciando. Desaparecen los últimos jugadores, cada vez quedan menos buggies y, poco a poco, los caminos vuelven a pertenecer sobre todo a quienes salen a pasear.

Para mí, entonces vuelve a entrar en escena mi collie. Por la noche suelo hacer un paseo más corto por la zona del New Course. Es bastante más breve que la vuelta matinal alrededor del Old Course, la temperatura es agradable y la actividad de golf ya ha terminado por ese día.

Wer nur ein paar Tage hier verbringt, sieht Golfplätze, Villen, das Hotel, viel Landschaft. Wer hier länger lebt, beginnt irgendwann etwas anderes wahrzunehmen: den Rhythmus, den dieser Ort im Laufe eines ganz gewöhnlichen Tages entwickelt.

In Salobre beginnt der Tag, sobald das erste Licht über den Golfplatz fällt.

Der frühe Morgen

Auf Gran Canaria verschieben sich Sonnenaufgang und Tagesbeginn zwischen Sommer und Winter deutlich weniger als in Mitteleuropa. Im Sommer wird es gegen sieben Uhr hell, im Winter etwa eine Stunde später.

Mein eigener Tagesbeginn richtet sich ohnehin weniger nach der Uhr als nach meinem Collie. Im Sommer starten wir meist gegen 7.15 Uhr, im Winter eher gegen acht. Unsere erste Runde führt einmal um den Old Course, ungefähr eine Stunde lang. Kaffee gibt es erst danach.

Um diese Zeit ist Salobre bereits wach, aber noch nicht wirklich in Bewegung. In der Vegetation entlang der Calle Swing, rund um den Golfplatz und in den Complejos verstecken sich ein paar Katzen, die man morgens immer wieder an denselben Stellen entdeckt.

Auch an den Villen erkennt man kleine Veränderungen. Man entwickelt mit der Zeit einen Blick für solche Dinge, wenn man in einem Complejo mit wechselnden Feriengästen lebt. Vor einer Villa steht plötzlich ein anderes Auto. An einer Tür wartet zum ersten Mal der bestellte Brötchenservice. Eine Terrasse, die gestern noch leer war, ist am nächsten Morgen wieder bewohnt. Man weiß dann oft schon, ohne jemanden getroffen zu haben: Hier hat der Urlaub gewechselt.

Mit den neuen Gästen verändert sich auch die Mischung. Deutsche, Briten, Skandinavier, Niederländer, Spanier und viele andere verbringen ihre Ferien nebeneinander – und jeder bringt ein wenig seinen eigenen Tagesrhythmus mit.

Jogger, Hunde und eine kleine Geste

Auf meiner Runde begegnen mir Spaziergänger mit und ohne Hund, und erstaunlich viele Jogger. Schnelle und langsame, ehrgeizige und gemütliche – und gelegentlich welche, denen man ansieht, dass die kanarische Sonne am Vortag überzeugender war als der Sonnenschutz.

Dazwischen kommen vereinzelt Autos entgegen. Handwerker, Gäste, Mitarbeiter, Urlauber, die früh unterwegs sind. Was mir dabei bis heute gefällt, ist eine kleine Selbstverständlichkeit: Man grüßt sich. Manchmal reicht ein kurzes Heben der Hand aus dem Auto, ein Nicken, ein „Buenos días“ durch das offene Fenster. Niemand macht daraus eine große Sache.

Aber gerade diese unkomplizierte Höflichkeit gehört für mich zu Gran Canaria – eine Alltagskultur, die andernorts längst nicht mehr selbstverständlich ist und die ich hier nicht missen möchte. Auch bei den Joggern und Spaziergängern unterscheiden sich die Begrüßungen: Manche bleiben für einen kurzen Satz stehen, andere nicken nur und laufen weiter.

Die Stimmung ist fast immer gut. Das überrascht eigentlich nicht. Viele Menschen, denen man hier morgens begegnet, haben gerade Zeit. Kein Weg ins Büro, keine Schule, kein Berufsverkehr. Für manche sind es zwei oder drei Wochen im Jahr, auf die sie sich lange gefreut haben. Das merkt man einem Ort an.

Die Menschen, die Salobre grün halten

Zu den zuverlässigsten Begegnungen gehören für mich die Gärtnerinnen und Gärtner. Fünf oder sechs von ihnen sehe ich auf meiner Runde praktisch jeden Morgen, während weitere längst über andere Bereiche des weitläufigen Resorts verteilt sind. Die Arbeit beginnt mit dem Tageslicht.

Als Gast sieht man vor allem das Ergebnis: gepflegte Grünflächen, geschnittene Pflanzen, Palmen, Blumen und die Vegetation entlang der Straßen und Villenanlagen. Wer hier länger lebt, versteht irgendwann, wie kontinuierlich diese Arbeit sein muss. Auf Gran Canaria wächst die Vegetation zwölf Monate im Jahr. Bei der Größe von Salobre dürfte die Gartenmannschaft im Grunde nie wirklich fertig werden – ist ein Bereich geschafft, kann man an anderer Stelle beinahe wieder von vorne beginnen.

Was mir nach all den Jahren genauso auffällt wie ihre Arbeit, ist die Freundlichkeit. „Hola, señor.“ „Buenos días.“ Manchmal ein kurzer Satz, nichts Spektakuläres. Aber aus solchen kleinen Begegnungen entsteht mit der Zeit Vertrautheit.

Fünfzehn Minuten vor dem ersten Kaffee

Meine Runde endet meistens am Tee 1 des Old Course. Dort steht meine Lieblingsbank. Von hier reicht der Blick Richtung Atlantik, zum Faro de Maspalomas und nach Meloneras. Fast jeden Morgen sitze ich dort ungefähr eine Viertelstunde.

Es passiert nichts Besonderes. Man sitzt einfach dort und schaut. Vielleicht ist genau das der Grund, warum daraus über die Jahre eine Gewohnheit geworden ist.

Danach geht es zurück zur Villa. Und dann gibt es endlich Kaffee.

Das Golfkino beginnt

Spätestens am späteren Vormittag verändert sich das Bild auf dem Old Course deutlich. Nun kommen immer mehr Spieler auf den Platz – im Sommer etwas früher, im Winter verschiebt sich der Rhythmus leicht nach hinten.

Von unserer Terrasse aus, mit Blick auf den Golfplatz, bekomme ich dann eine Form der Unterhaltung, die in keiner Ausstattungsbeschreibung auftaucht. Ich nenne es Golfkino. Mit dem zweiten oder dritten Kaffee kann man den Spielern erstaunlich lange zusehen.

Golf hat eine wunderbare Unberechenbarkeit. Morgens weiß eigentlich niemand genau, wie die kommenden Stunden verlaufen werden. Ein sauberer Schlag, ein Ball irgendwo dort, wo er definitiv nicht hin sollte, eine längere Suche – und manchmal genügt die Körpersprache eines Spielers, um zu erkennen, dass das gerade nicht der Plan war. Gelegentlich hört man ein „Fore!“. Ansonsten ist selbst ein gut belegter Golfplatz erstaunlich ruhig. Die elektrischen Golfcarts bewegen sich durch die Landschaft und gehören irgendwann einfach zum Bild.

Man muss selbst kein Golfer sein, um daran seinen Spaß zu haben.

Nicht jede Villa bietet diesen Blick – Lage und Ausrichtung machen innerhalb des Resorts einen erheblichen Unterschied.

Wenn am Mittag wenig passiert

Gegen Mittag zeigt sich eine der Eigenarten von Salobre besonders deutlich. Es gibt keinen klassischen Ortskern, keinen Marktplatz, keine Einkaufsstraße, keine Schule, keine Kirche, um die sich das tägliche Leben sammelt. Und trotzdem sind viele Villen bewohnt, auf dem Golfplatz wird gespielt, im Hotel sind Gäste.

Salobre konzentriert seine Menschen nicht. Es verteilt sie.

Einige spielen Golf, andere liegen am Pool, sitzen auf ihrer Terrasse oder sind längst Richtung Küste oder ins Inselinnere gefahren. Dadurch kann das Resort an einem gut belegten Tag erstaunlich leer wirken.

Und genau das muss man mögen. Es ist kein Ort, der einen ständig beschäftigt. Vielmehr lässt er ziemlich viel Raum dafür, selbst zu entscheiden, was aus dem Tag wird.

Nach der Golfrunde

Irgendwann endet auch die längste Runde. Aber Golf endet nicht zwangsläufig am letzten Loch. Danach sitzt man zusammen, trinkt etwas, bespricht gute Schläge und sehr wahrscheinlich noch ausführlicher die schlechten.

Eine der Möglichkeiten dafür bietet die Terrasse des Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity. Hoch über Teilen des Golfplatzes hat man dort einen weiten Blick über die Anlage. Wer lieber in seiner Villa bleibt, lässt den Nachmittag genauso gut auf der eigenen Terrasse ausklingen.

Irgendwann verschwinden Golfschuhe und Sportkleidung. Man duscht, richtet sich für den Abend her und bekommt langsam Hunger.

Was machen wir heute Abend?

Auch am Abend muss man Salobre nicht verlassen. Das Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity bietet verschiedene gastronomische Möglichkeiten, von unkompliziert bis kulinarisch ambitioniert – mit dem Sidecar gibt es dort eine deutlich anspruchsvollere Küche.

Später füllen sich die Terrassen wieder. Menschen sitzen zusammen, essen, trinken etwas, und je nach Abend gehört auch Live-Musik dazu.

Von Gästen habe ich trotzdem schon gehört: „Mir wäre es dort zu ruhig.“ Das kann ich nachvollziehen. Die gute Nachricht ist: Man muss sich nicht zwischen Ruhe und Leben entscheiden.

Wer einen Abend im Resort verbringen möchte, bleibt dort. Wer Restaurants, Promenade und deutlich mehr Betrieb sucht, fährt nach Maspalomas oder Meloneras – nach etwa 15 bis 20 Minuten befindet man sich in einer vollkommen anderen Urlaubswelt. Diese Vielfalt an der Küste ist umfangreich genug für einen eigenen Beitrag.

Die letzte Runde

Mit dem Sonnenuntergang wird der Golfplatz langsam leer. Die letzten Spieler verschwinden, die Carts werden weniger, und irgendwann gehören die Wege wieder stärker den Spaziergängern.

Für mich kommt dann noch einmal mein Collie ins Spiel. Am Abend gehe ich meist eine kleinere Runde am New Course – neun Löcher reichen jetzt völlig. Die Runde ist deutlich kürzer als morgens um den Old Course, die Temperaturen sind angenehm, und der Golfbetrieb ist für diesen Tag beendet.

La pregunta parece sencilla. En realidad, es una de las más difíciles de responder sobre Salobre Golf Resort. La respuesta depende de cuándo se esté aquí, de dónde esté situada la villa y de lo que cada uno entienda por tranquilidad.

Se podría escoger una mañana en la que, hacia las 6:30, el primer greenkeeper ya esté trabajando en algún punto del campo de golf con su cortacésped. Quien se aloje justo al lado del campo puede oírlo a cierta distancia. También se podría hablar del camión que lleva alimentos al hotel por la mañana. O de una obra en la que los trabajos comienzan alrededor de las 8:00 entre semana y continúan hasta la tarde.

Todo eso existe.

Sin embargo, juzgar Salobre por esos momentos aislados distorsiona el carácter del lugar. No hay tráfico de paso, ni calle comercial, ni paseo marítimo, ni discotecas. La mayoría de los vehículos pertenecen a huéspedes, propietarios, empleados o empresas de servicios. Sobre todo al caer la tarde y durante la noche se percibe hasta qué punto este valle permanece apartado de lo que sucede fuera.

Más interesante resulta observar cómo cambia Salobre a lo largo del año. Con las estaciones cambian el tiempo, la ocupación y el tipo de huéspedes, y con ellos también cambia la atmósfera del resort.

Diciembre hasta mediados de febrero – la temporada clásica de invierno

Para muchos visitantes de Europa Central y del Norte, diciembre, enero y la primera mitad de febrero se encuentran entre los meses más atractivos. Según mi experiencia, también forman parte de las épocas del año con un tiempo más estable.

Es frecuente encontrar cielos despejados, mucha luz y temperaturas especialmente agradables para jugar al golf. Naturalmente, tampoco en Gran Canaria existe una garantía meteorológica. Pero con el paso de los años se aprecia un cierto ritmo que los visitantes habituales conocen bien.

En invierno Salobre registra una buena ocupación. Los campos de golf tienen actividad, muchas villas están alquiladas y el hotel se encuentra en plena temporada.

Lo llamativo es lo poco que se percibe esa actividad fuera de las zonas centrales. De vez en cuando, el viento trae desde el campo de golf un relajado “¡Fore!”. Por lo demás, el complejo de villas puede estar prácticamente completo sin transmitir en muchas zonas la sensación de estar especialmente concurrido.

Desde mediados de febrero – la primera transición

A partir de mediados de febrero, el tiempo suele volverse menos predecible. Pueden seguir llegando semanas excelentes, pero aumentan los periodos con nubes, viento o algún día algo más fresco.

También disminuye poco a poco la actividad dentro del resort. Especialmente en abril hay momentos en los que incluso el hotel de cinco estrellas puede parecer sorprendentemente poco concurrido. No está vacío, pero sí claramente más tranquilo que durante la temporada de invierno.

Estos meses también son un momento natural para realizar trabajos dentro del resort. Y eso nos lleva a un aspecto que no debería faltar en una respuesta sincera sobre la tranquilidad de Salobre.

Las obras – parte del paisaje

Salobre Golf Resort tiene alrededor de 30 años y fue desarrollado desde el principio con un nivel de calidad elevado y siguiendo un plan urbanístico claramente definido.

En todo el valle no existen bloques de apartamentos ni edificios de viviendas colectivas. La tipología más compacta es la villa pareada. Por lo demás, el paisaje está definido por villas independientes, parcelas amplias y los campos de golf. Este concepto se ha mantenido desde el inicio.

Sin embargo, el desarrollo no está completamente terminado. En algunas parcelas todavía se construyen nuevas villas.

Una obra puede parecer enorme en una fotografía. La imagen con la grúa y la maquinaria pesada lo muestra con claridad. Al mismo tiempo, justo delante, el juego continúa con normalidad.

También demuestra hasta qué punto estos trabajos pueden ser muy localizados. Quien se aloje justo al lado de una obra activa la percibirá durante los días laborables. Unas calles más allá, esa misma obra puede tener muy poca importancia.

Los trabajos suelen realizarse durante el día, en ocasiones hasta alrededor de las 16:00. Por eso, al elegir una villa, no solo merece la pena fijarse en la piscina, las vistas o la distancia al campo de golf. El entorno inmediato también forma parte de la ubicación.

La segunda imagen muestra otra perspectiva. Entre una vegetación ya consolidada y un campo de golf integrado desde hace años en el paisaje siguen apareciendo algunas villas nuevas. Salobre no está siendo reconstruido a gran escala; simplemente continúa desarrollándose de forma puntual.

Julio hasta finales de septiembre – el verano español

La primera semana de julio suele marcar el comienzo del segundo periodo especialmente estable del año. Con frecuencia se prolonga hasta bien entrado septiembre.

Al mismo tiempo, cambia el público.

Llegan propietarios y veraneantes españoles procedentes de la Península, del norte de Gran Canaria y de otras islas del archipiélago. Muchas villas que durante el invierno se alquilan a huéspedes de Europa Central y del Norte son ocupadas en verano por sus propios propietarios españoles.

Así surge una segunda temporada alta. Encontrar una buena villa en julio o agosto puede resultar tan difícil como durante los meses de invierno más solicitados. Lo que cambia es el público.

La explicación es bastante sencilla. En invierno, muchos europeos buscan en Gran Canaria sol y temperaturas suaves. En pleno verano, muchos españoles valoran precisamente el clima más moderado de la isla, mientras que en la Península y en buena parte del Mediterráneo las temperaturas pueden ser considerablemente más altas.

En verano, Salobre no se vacía: se vuelve más español.

Y con ello cambia también la atmósfera. Familias y amigos pasan más tiempo en las terrazas, los niños juegan y los fines de semana se alargan alrededor de la mesa.

También llegan grupos más jóvenes durante tres o cuatro días. Las villas más grandes, con cinco o seis dormitorios, ofrecen espacio suficiente para varios amigos. Por eso, algún fin de semana de verano puede ser bastante animado y, en ocasiones, también hacerse notar.

Eso no cambia el carácter del resort; simplemente forma parte del verano. Y sigue siendo un ambiente controlado. Si algún grupo se anima demasiado a última hora de la noche, el servicio de seguridad se ocupa de que se respeten las normas del complejo.

En verano, Salobre tiene más vida y, en ocasiones, también se hace notar más. Pero eso no lo convierte en un destino de fiesta.

Octubre y noviembre – un nuevo cambio

Después del verano, el panorama vuelve a cambiar. Termina el periodo vacacional español, disminuye la ocupación y el tiempo se vuelve más variable.

A partir de mediados de octubre comienzan a regresar poco a poco los primeros visitantes europeos de invierno. Noviembre sigue siendo un mes de transición, tanto para el clima como para el resort, antes de que las condiciones vuelvan a estabilizarse con frecuencia hacia finales de noviembre y principios de diciembre.

Entonces regresa esa época de aire claro y temperaturas agradables que atrae año tras año a numerosos golfistas a Gran Canaria.

El ciclo anual vuelve a empezar.

It sounds like a simple question. In reality, it is one of the more difficult questions to answer about Salobre Golf Resort. Much depends on when you are here, where your villa is located and what you personally consider quiet.

You could pick an early morning when, at around 6.30 a.m., the first greenkeeper is already somewhere out on the golf course with a mower. If your villa is directly beside the course, you may hear him in the distance. You could focus on the delivery truck bringing food to the hotel in the morning. Or on a construction site where work begins at around 8 a.m. on weekdays and continues into the afternoon.

All of that exists.

Yet judging Salobre by those isolated moments would distort the character of the place. There is no through traffic, no shopping street, no promenade and no nightlife district. Most vehicles belong to guests, owners, employees or service companies. Especially in the evening and at night, you notice how little from the outside world reaches this valley.

A more interesting question is how Salobre changes over the course of a year. The weather, occupancy and type of guest all change with the seasons – and so does the atmosphere throughout the resort.

December to mid-February – the classic winter season

For many visitors from Central and Northern Europe, December, January and the first half of February are among the most attractive months. In my experience, they are also among the most settled periods of the year in terms of weather.

The air is often clear, there is plenty of sunshine and the temperatures are particularly pleasant for golf. Of course, there is no weather guarantee on Gran Canaria either. But over the years, a certain pattern becomes apparent – one that regular visitors tend to recognise.

Salobre is well occupied during the winter. The golf courses are busy, many villas are rented and the hotel is in its main season.

What is striking is how little of that activity is noticeable away from the central areas. Occasionally the wind carries a relaxed “Fore!” across from the golf course. Apart from that, the villa resort can be almost fully occupied without feeling particularly busy in many parts of the valley.

From mid-February – the first transition period

From around mid-February, the weather tends to become less predictable. There can still be excellent weeks, but changing conditions with cloud, wind or the occasional cooler day become more common.

Activity within the resort also gradually decreases. In April in particular, there are times when even the five-star hotel can feel surprisingly quiet. Not deserted – simply much less busy than during the winter season.

These months are also a natural time for work around the resort. And that leads to one aspect that should not be left out of an honest answer to the question of how peaceful Salobre really is.

Construction work – part of the picture

Salobre Golf Resort is around 30 years old and was developed from the beginning to a high standard and according to a clear master plan.

There are no apartment blocks or multi-family residential buildings anywhere in the valley. The most compact form of development is the semi-detached villa. Otherwise, detached villas, generous plots and the golf courses define the landscape. This concept has been maintained from the beginning.

Development is not completely finished, however. New villas are still being built on individual plots.

A construction site can look enormous in a photograph. The image with the crane and heavy machinery makes that particularly clear. At the same time, golf continues as normal immediately in front of it.

It also shows how localised this kind of work can be. If you are staying directly beside an active construction site, you will notice it on weekdays. A few streets away, the same project may hardly matter at all.

Work normally takes place during the day, sometimes until around 4 p.m. So when choosing a villa, the pool, the view and the distance to the golf course are not the only things worth considering. The immediate surroundings matter as well.

The second image shows a different perspective. Individual new villas are being built between established vegetation and a golf course that has long been part of the landscape. Salobre is not being rebuilt on a large scale; development is continuing selectively in individual parts of the resort.

July to late September – the Spanish summer

The first week of July often marks the beginning of the second particularly settled weather period of the year. It usually continues well into September.

At the same time, the guests change.

Spanish owners and holidaymakers now arrive from the mainland, from the north of Gran Canaria and from the other Canary Islands. Many villas that are rented to visitors from Central and Northern Europe during the winter are occupied by their Spanish owners in summer.

This creates a second high season. Finding a good villa in July or August can be just as difficult as during the most popular winter months – only the guests are different.

The reason is fairly simple. In winter, Europeans come to Gran Canaria for sunshine and mild temperatures. In high summer, many Spaniards appreciate the island's comparatively moderate climate, while temperatures on the mainland and around the Mediterranean can be considerably higher.

Salobre does not become emptier in summer – it becomes more Spanish.

And that changes the atmosphere. Families and friends spend longer evenings on their terraces, children play, and weekends are often about eating together and enjoying time with friends.

Younger groups also come for three or four days at a time. Larger villas with five or six bedrooms offer plenty of space for a group of friends. On a summer weekend, things can therefore become quite lively – and occasionally quite audible.

It does not change the character of the resort; it is simply part of summer. It remains controlled, however. If a group becomes too exuberant later in the evening, the security service ensures that the resort rules are respected.

Salobre is more sociable in summer and occasionally louder. That still does not make it a party destination.

October and November – the next transition

After summer, the picture changes again. The Spanish holiday season comes to an end, occupancy decreases and the weather becomes more variable.

From around mid-October, the first European winter visitors gradually begin to return. November remains a transition period for both the weather and the resort before conditions often become more settled again towards the end of November and the beginning of December.

Then the period of clear air and pleasant temperatures begins again – the conditions that bring many golfers back to Gran Canaria year after year.

The annual cycle starts again.

Die Frage klingt einfach. Tatsächlich gehört sie zu den schwierigeren Fragen über das Salobre Golf Resort. Denn die Antwort hängt davon ab, wann man hier ist, wo die Villa liegt und welchen Maßstab man anlegt.

Man könnte einen Morgen herausgreifen, an dem gegen 6.30 Uhr irgendwo auf dem Golfplatz der erste Greenkeeper mit seinem Mäher unterwegs ist. Wer unmittelbar am Platz wohnt, kann ihn aus einiger Entfernung hören. Man könnte den Lieferwagen nehmen, der morgens Lebensmittel zum Hotel bringt. Oder eine Baustelle, auf der werktags gegen 8 Uhr die Arbeit beginnt und bis zum Nachmittag gearbeitet wird.

All das gibt es.

Trotzdem verzerrt es den Charakter von Salobre, diese einzelnen Momente zum Maßstab zu machen. Es gibt keinen Durchgangsverkehr, keine Einkaufsstraße, keine Promenade und keine Diskotheken. Die meisten Fahrzeuge gehören Gästen, Eigentümern, Mitarbeitern oder Dienstleistern. Besonders am Abend und in der Nacht merkt man, wie wenig von außen in dieses Tal hineinwirkt.

Interessanter ist deshalb die Frage, wie sich Salobre im Laufe eines Jahres verändert. Denn mit den Jahreszeiten wechseln Wetter, Belegung und Publikum – und damit auch die Atmosphäre im Resort.

Dezember bis Mitte Februar – die klassische Wintersaison

Für viele Gäste aus Mittel- und Nordeuropa sind Dezember, Januar und die erste Februarhälfte die attraktivsten Monate. Nach meiner Erfahrung gehören sie auch zu den beständigsten Wetterphasen des Jahres.

Häufig gibt es klare Luft, viel Sonne und Temperaturen, bei denen Golf besonders angenehm ist. Eine Wettergarantie gibt es natürlich auch auf Gran Canaria nicht. Über viele Jahre betrachtet zeigt sich jedoch ein Rhythmus, den Stammgäste kennen.

Im Winter ist Salobre gut belegt. Die Golfplätze werden intensiv genutzt, viele Villen sind vermietet und auch das Hotel hat Saison.

Bemerkenswert ist, wie wenig man davon außerhalb der zentralen Bereiche mitbekommt. Gelegentlich trägt der Wind ein lockeres „Fore!“ vom Golfplatz herüber. Ansonsten kann das Villenresort nahezu vollständig belegt sein, ohne dass man davon in vielen Bereichen besonders viel bemerkt.

Ab Mitte Februar – die erste Übergangszeit

Ab Mitte Februar wird das Wetter weniger berechenbar. Es können weiterhin ausgezeichnete Wochen folgen, gleichzeitig treten häufiger wechselnde Wetterlagen mit Wolken, Wind oder einzelnen kühleren Tagen auf.

Auch im Resort nimmt der Betrieb nach und nach ab. Besonders im April kann man zeitweise den Eindruck bekommen, dass selbst das Fünf-Sterne-Hotel erstaunlich wenig besucht ist. Nicht verlassen – aber deutlich leerer als während der Wintersaison.

Diese Monate werden auch für Arbeiten genutzt. Und damit kommt man zu einem Punkt, den man bei einer ehrlichen Antwort auf die Frage nach der Ruhe nicht auslassen sollte.

Baustellen – sie gehören dazu

Das Salobre Golf Resort ist rund 30 Jahre alt und wurde von Beginn an auf einem hohen Qualitätsniveau und nach einem klaren Masterplan entwickelt.

Im gesamten Tal gibt es keine Mehrfamilienhäuser oder Apartmentanlagen. Die dichteste Bebauungsform ist das Doppelhaus. Ansonsten bestimmen freistehende Villen, großzügige Grundstücke und die Golfanlagen das Bild. An diesem Konzept wird seit den Anfängen festgehalten.

Vollständig abgeschlossen ist die Entwicklung dennoch nicht. Auf einzelnen Grundstücken entstehen weiterhin neue Villen.

Eine solche Baustelle kann auf einem Foto gewaltig wirken. Das Bild mit Kran und schwerem Gerät zeigt das besonders deutlich. Gleichzeitig läuft unmittelbar davor der Golfbetrieb ganz normal weiter.

Das zeigt auch, wie lokal solche Arbeiten sein können. Wer direkt neben einer aktiven Baustelle wohnt, wird sie werktags wahrnehmen. Einige Straßen weiter kann dieselbe Baustelle kaum noch eine Rolle spielen.

Gearbeitet wird üblicherweise tagsüber, teilweise bis gegen 16 Uhr. Für die Wahl einer Villa bedeutet das: Nicht nur Pool, Aussicht und Entfernung zum Golfplatz sind interessant. Auch das unmittelbare Umfeld gehört zur Lage.

Das zweite Motiv zeigt eine andere Perspektive. Zwischen gewachsener Vegetation und einem längst etablierten Golfplatz entstehen einzelne neue Villen. Salobre wird nicht großflächig neu gebaut, sondern punktuell weiterentwickelt.

Juli bis Ende September – der spanische Sommer

Mit der ersten Juliwoche beginnt häufig die zweite ausgesprochen beständige Wetterphase des Jahres. Sie reicht bis weit in den September hinein.

Gleichzeitig verändert sich das Publikum.

Jetzt kommen spanische Eigentümer und Feriengäste – vom Festland, aus dem Norden Gran Canarias und von anderen Kanarischen Inseln. Viele Villen, die im Winter an Gäste aus Mittel- und Nordeuropa vermietet werden, sind im Sommer von ihren spanischen Eigentümern selbst belegt.

Dadurch entsteht eine zweite Hochsaison. Eine gute Villa zu bekommen, kann im Juli und August ähnlich schwierig sein wie in den gefragten Wintermonaten – nur das Publikum ist ein anderes.

Die Erklärung liegt nahe: Im Winter suchen Europäer auf Gran Canaria Sonne und milde Temperaturen. Im Hochsommer schätzen viele Spanier das ausgeglichene Klima der Insel, während es auf dem Festland und am Mittelmeer erheblich heißer werden kann.

Salobre wird im Sommer also nicht leerer – es wird spanischer.

Damit verändert sich auch die Atmosphäre. Familien und Freunde sitzen länger auf den Terrassen, Kinder spielen, am Wochenende wird gemeinsam gegessen und gefeiert.

Es kommen aber auch jüngere Gruppen für drei oder vier Tage. Gerade größere Villen mit fünf oder sechs Schlafzimmern bieten dafür genügend Platz. Dann kann es an einem Sommerwochenende durchaus einmal sehr lustig und entsprechend hörbar werden.

Das ist kein Widerspruch zum Charakter des Resorts, sondern ein Teil des Sommers. Es bleibt allerdings kontrolliert: Wird eine Gesellschaft am späten Abend zu ausgelassen, sorgt der Sicherheitsdienst dafür, dass die Regeln eingehalten werden.

Salobre ist im Sommer geselliger und gelegentlich auch lauter. Zur Partyadresse wird es deshalb nicht.

Oktober und November – der nächste Wechsel

Nach dem Sommer verändert sich das Bild erneut. Die spanische Ferienzeit läuft aus, die Belegung geht zurück und auch das Wetter wird wechselhafter.

Ab Mitte Oktober kommen nach und nach die ersten europäischen Wintergäste zurück. Im November befinden sich Wetter und Resort noch im Übergang, bevor sich die Bedingungen gegen Ende November und Anfang Dezember häufig wieder stabilisieren.

Dann beginnt erneut jene Zeit mit klarer Luft und angenehmen Temperaturen, die viele Golfer Jahr für Jahr nach Gran Canaria zieht.

Der Jahreskreis schließt sich.

Un pequeño pueblo costero con restaurantes sencillos, una costa de piedra y sorprendentemente poco turismo convencional. Sin embargo, desde finales de los años ochenta, Pozo Izquierdo ocupa un lugar destacado en el mapa mundial del windsurf. En julio de 2026, la élite internacional volvió a reunirse aquí para la 38.ª edición del Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup. Basta visitarlo en verano para entender rápidamente por qué.

Unas pocas calles descienden hacia el Atlántico. Casas blancas y de colores se agrupan cerca de la costa, entre pequeños restaurantes, bares y tiendas de surf. No hay grandes complejos hoteleros, ni avenidas comerciales, ni un paseo marítimo cuidadosamente preparado para el turismo.

Y entonces bajas del coche. El viento se hace notar de inmediato.

Escenario de la Copa del Mundo desde hace décadas

Pozo Izquierdo pertenece al municipio de Santa Lucía de Tirajana y desde hace décadas es uno de los nombres más conocidos del windsurf internacional. Del 4 al 12 de julio de 2026 se celebró aquí la 38.ª edición del Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup, que volvió a reunir en la costa de Pozo Izquierdo a algunos de los mejores especialistas internacionales de olas.

Philip Köster ganó la competición masculina en 2026, mientras que Daida Moreno se impuso en la femenina. Su victoria encaja especialmente bien con la historia de este lugar: la múltiple campeona mundial mantiene una estrecha relación con Pozo Izquierdo y, junto a su hermana gemela Iballa, ha contribuido durante muchos años a consolidar la reputación internacional de este enclave del windsurf.

Otro gran apellido une a varias generaciones con Gran Canaria: Dunkerbeck. Bjørn Dunkerbeck creció en la isla y se convirtió en una de las figuras más importantes de la historia del windsurf, con 42 títulos mundiales. Su hijo Liam continúa esa historia y en 2026 alcanzó la final masculina de Pozo Izquierdo, donde terminó en cuarta posición.

Los fuertes vientos y las exigentes olas han convertido a Pozo Izquierdo en uno de los escenarios consolidados del windsurf internacional.

En verano se entiende por qué

Durante mi visita en agosto, el viento soplaba con fuerza y de manera constante. Aun así, no resultaba desagradable. Era un viento cálido que, bajo el intenso sol del verano, aportaba incluso cierto alivio. En el Atlántico, los windsurfistas cruzaban a gran velocidad el agua agitada, desaparecían entre la espuma y las olas y volvían a aparecer segundos después. No hace falta practicar windsurf para quedarse aquí un buen rato observando.

Los surfistas forman parte del lugar

El windsurf está integrado en la vida cotidiana. Jóvenes surfistas se sientan en los pequeños restaurantes junto a los vecinos del pueblo, mientras otros permanecen en la costa con sus tablas o simplemente contemplan el mar. La mezcla resulta completamente natural.

En ese sentido, Pozo Izquierdo recuerda a los clásicos pueblos surferos, pero sin la puesta en escena turística que suele acompañarlos.

Mar, viento y un lugar protegido para bañarse

Aquí no hay una playa de arena convencional. La costa está formada por piedras y terreno volcánico oscuro. En la zona más protegida existe un área de baño con escaleras y barandillas. Muy cerca, la gente se sienta al sol en las terrazas junto al mar y contempla el agua. Apenas unos metros más allá vuelve a dominar el Atlántico abierto.

Pequeños restaurantes en lugar de una zona turística

Durante mi visita, en los restaurantes había sobre todo españoles y vecinos del pueblo, junto a personas vinculadas al mundo del surf. La calidad de la gastronomía fue mejor de lo que esperaba. Se puede comer bien, tomar algo y sentarse prácticamente junto al Atlántico, con precios que siguen resultando razonables para lo que se ofrece.

El pueblo tenía ambiente, pero en ningún momento daba sensación de estar abarrotado.

Sorprendentemente cerca del sur

Desde Maspalomas, el trayecto dura unos 20 minutos. Desde Salobre Golf Resort, lo razonable es calcular alrededor de media hora. Durante mi visita fue fácil encontrar aparcamiento. Geográficamente, Pozo Izquierdo está muy cerca del sur turístico. Por su ambiente, parece mucho más lejos.

Quien quiera descubrir durante unas horas una cara diferente de Gran Canaria en verano la encontrará aquí: el Atlántico, los fuertes alisios, pequeños restaurantes y una comunidad costera en la que la vida cotidiana y el windsurf conviven de forma natural.

Una vez al año, la élite mundial del windsurf llega a Pozo Izquierdo. Cuando termina la competición, la vida junto al Atlántico simplemente continúa.

Y por qué aquí se celebran competiciones mundiales desde hace décadas se entiende en cuanto uno baja del coche.
