Updated: 16 February 2026 · Reading time: approx. 5–6 minutes

Maspalomas Golf in Gran Canaria – possible modernisation and construction works from 2026

An important planning step for a possible modernisation and urban reorganisation of Maspalomas Golf has been assessed positively. The basis is a so-called “Programa de Actuación de Mejora Urbana” (PAMU). According to local reports, the strategic environmental report was evaluated positively by the competent body of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

What is planned for Maspalomas Golf?

At its core, this is not about minor adjustments, but about a possible reorganisation of the area, including additional tourist use and infrastructure measures in the surrounding environment.

  • possible reorganisation or redesign of the existing golf course
  • according to current reports, a hotel project on a separate section of the site
  • according to current reports, the construction of 19 high-end villas
  • upgrading of roads, paths, lighting and public areas

When could work at Maspalomas Golf begin?

According to local reports, a possible start of initial works from May 2026 has been mentioned. Whether this timetable will actually be met depends on the further planning and approval procedures. If the project moves ahead, temporary restrictions to play in certain construction phases are conceivable.

What does this mean for golf holidaymakers?

Anyone planning specifically to play at Maspalomas Golf in 2026 or 2027 should check before booking whether temporary restrictions are in place, for example individual holes being closed, shortened rounds or construction activity in certain areas. At the same time, the south of Gran Canaria remains in principle a stable golf destination with several courses.

Assessment

In the long term, the project is aimed at a qualitative upgrading of the location. In the short term, possible construction phases could affect the playing and visitor experience, depending on timing, scope and the actual construction section involved.

Urban planning background of the project

The underlying “Programa de Actuación de Mejora Urbana” (PAMU) is a planning instrument in Spain used for the reorganisation of already developed areas. Its purpose is to adapt existing tourist or infrastructure areas to current requirements without designating completely new building zones.

In the case of Maspalomas, this mainly concerns the functional reorganisation of the golf course area. This may involve more efficient land use, a clearer separation of individual use zones and the modernisation of technical infrastructure. This includes, among other things, traffic routing, lighting, paths and utility lines.

Importance for tourism development

Maspalomas Golf has been part of the tourism infrastructure in the south of Gran Canaria for decades. Due to its location close to the coastal area and the dune landscape, it plays an important role in the region’s leisure and sports offering.

The planned requalification is linked to the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana’s broader aim of structurally modernising existing tourist facilities. In recent years, several projects with a similar objective have been initiated in order to secure the long-term competitiveness of the destination.

Planning and legal context of Maspalomas Golf

With the positive assessment of the strategic environmental report, an important formal step has been reached. This report considers, among other things, possible effects on the environment, landscape, traffic and existing uses. Only on this basis can the further detailed planning proceed.

The current procedural stage therefore creates an important basis for the next steps. However, detailed planning, construction phases and concrete implementation will take place through further administrative procedures.
