Anyone who has known Gran Canaria for decades should surely know Salobre Golf Resort, or so you might think.
Yet the opposite has repeatedly surprised me over the past few years.
Whether it is an estate agent who has lived on Gran Canaria for around ten years, a well-known YouTube creator or friends who have called the island home for many years, a surprising number of people know Salobre Golf Resort only by name. Some have never even been there.
That is precisely what makes this place so special.
Most visitors know Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas or Puerto de Mogán. Salobre Golf Resort, by contrast, remains almost hidden. Anyone driving south on the GC-1 can easily pass exit 53 without giving it a second thought. Nothing suggests what will open up behind a barrier only two minutes later.
You don’t discover Salobre Golf. You are drawn into it.
With every bend, the landscape changes. The road winds through volcanic terrain, past palm trees, carefully maintained gardens and the two golf courses. Suddenly, you find yourself in a world that has little in common with the tourist bustle of the coast.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons why this place has remained something of an insider’s secret.
What is it really like to stay at Salobre Golf Resort?
I am asked this question again and again.
Is it quiet there?
There is no simple answer.
Anyone who has visited only once has really seen only one side of it. In winter and summer, the resort can feel like two almost entirely different worlds.
Winter – golf, tranquillity and freedom
During the winter months, visitors from across Europe shape the atmosphere.
Many come so they can continue playing golf throughout the European winter. Others enjoy the pool, read on the terrace or simply spend relaxed hours in the sun.
Mornings are spent playing golf or taking it easy. In the afternoon, many people head to Maspalomas or Meloneras. By car, the journey takes around ten to fifteen minutes.
Perhaps for an ice cream, a walk by the lighthouse, a browse through the shops or a relaxed meal in a restaurant.
Then you drive back.
Back to a completely different atmosphere.
A hire car means freedom. Each day, you can decide afresh what you feel like doing: going to the beach, playing golf, heading into the mountains or simply spending a quiet day on your own terrace.
At 61, I am often one of the younger guests during the winter months. Many visitors have been spending several weeks on Gran Canaria every year for a long time, enjoying precisely this combination of golf, pleasant weather and tranquillity.
Summer – Spanish life takes over
Only a few months later, the resort feels almost like a different place.
Once the summer holidays begin, the atmosphere changes noticeably.
Many families now arrive from Gran Canaria itself or from mainland Spain. Golf is still played, of course, but it is no longer as central as it is in winter.
Family life, the pool, good food and long evenings on the terrace now set the rhythm of the day.
You experience more than just a holiday; you also get a glimpse of Spanish life.
Children play in the pool. Several generations sit together on the terrace. People cook, laugh and stay outside until late in the evening.
The nights are often pleasantly warm. Temperatures frequently remain between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius, so life naturally moves outdoors.
Of course, the resort is not as quiet in summer as it is in winter. Some weekends can be livelier, although during the week things usually settle down again quite quickly.
In summer, incidentally, I am usually one of the older guests. That alone shows how different the resort can feel from one season to another.
My personal conclusion
The longer I have known Salobre Golf Resort, the less I see it simply as a golf resort.
In winter, it is quiet, international and centred around golf.
In summer, it becomes lively, family-oriented and distinctly Spanish.
It is precisely this change that gives the resort its appeal.
That is exactly why I look forward to taking exit 53 every time.
Because behind this unassuming exit, another world begins.
